Aberro Worthy of Place in 2017 Champagne Stakes Field

April 11th, 2017

Matt Laurie has been pleased with the ability displayed by Aberro through his short racing career so far and believes that the horse is worthy of a place in Saturday’s 2017 Group 1 Champagne Stakes field at Royal Randwick.

Aberro has only made two competitive appearances at the races since making his debut in March and is unlucky not to have broken through for a maiden win, having run second in both races.

Laurie has been thrilled with everything that he has seen of the All Too Hard colt to date and believes that the horse will lay a typically good account for himself when he takes his place in the 2017 Champagne Stakes field.

“It’s usually a small field and worth a lot of money,” Laurie told AAP.

“Our horse has come through his only two runs really well and I think the mile looks like it would really suit him.

“I’m happy to put him in it and see where we stand but also acknowledge he’s going to be a lot better next time around.

“I don’t think we’ve got anything to lose.”

Aberro worked to the line well to finish second behind Merchant Navy in the Racing.com Maiden Plate (1200m) on debut on March 2nd and had undoubtedly taken plenty of benefit from the run when second behind Eshtiraak in the Mornington Sires’ (1500m) last time out on March 25th.

Having won a smart Canberra barrier trial over 900m on April 7th, Laurie believes that the two-year-old will again improve into the Champagne Stakes third-up on Saturday.

“I would have liked there to have been some more experienced horses in there to give him a chance to settle a little bit and finish off,” Laurie said of the colt’s trial.

“He was up against horses who hadn’t had the experience that he’s had and he ended up controlling it, but it was just a nice, soft trial.”
