April 14th, 2016

James Cummings concedes the 2016 Champagne Stakes was never really on the agenda for Prized Icon, but is confident the colt is a realistic chance of causing an upset in the two-year-old feature race for two-year-olds at Randwick on Saturday.

Prized Icon has more than stamped himself as a colt to follow through his short but impressive racing career so far; failing to finish outside the first three in five career starts, and will carry winning form into the Champagne Stakes after delivering a classy field defeat in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) last weekend.

Cummings told AAP the son of More Than Ready has come through his run on Day 2 of The Championships well and is confident the conditions of the 2016 Champagne Stakes will play directly into his strengths on Saturday.

“It’s only Wednesday but he looks really well through the run,” Cummings said.

“He’s a really tough horse.

“The nominations looked thin. Second, fourth and fifth from the Sires’ – they’re not there. So the temptation was good enough for us to at least accept.

“He loves the track, he loves the work.

“I would think he’d run really well if I decide to run him, but it’s going to boil down to whether or not we think that’s what we want to do with him at this point in his career.”

Prized Icon immediately announced himself to the Australian racing community upon debuting in spring; running third in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) before immediately returning to the paddock.

Resuming this time for third in the talent-rich More Than Winning Plate (1000m), Prized Icon ran second behind Telperion in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) in his return to black type company on February 13th.

Progressing to third in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) on March 6th, Prized Icon again finished a close second in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) in his only other start prior to the Fernhill Handicap on March 26th. is currently offering the best 2016 Champagne Stakes odds, for which Prized Icon can be taken at a generous quote of $8 for success.
