Sicario Ready for 2016 Champagne Stakes

April 13th, 2016

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have already experienced success at the highest level during the 2016 Autumn Carnival, and are confident Sicario can continue their impressive campaign in Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Sicario has appeared on course only twice in a short racing career so far and while yet to break through for a race win, produced a slick turn of foot to finish a close second in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) most recently on April 2nd.

While conceding the gelding undoubtedly faces his biggest task to date in the 2016 Champagne Stakes, Busuttin told AAP he is confident Sicario is in the right form to lay a great account for himself in the two-year-old feature race.

“It’s a massive step up,” Busuttin said.

“You can’t hide the fact that New Zealand two-year-old form is vastly inferior to Australian two-year old form.

“He was going to be racing in two weeks’ time in Auckland going around in a mile race for $NZ50,000, so we thought why not?

“We’re happy to take a chance.

“The 1400m on a heavy track in New Zealand was like a swamp so I suppose that’s like a mile.

“We think he’s a pretty smart horse and I think he’ll end up a Group horse at some stage.”

Trialling well in the lead up to his competitive debut, Sicario jumped from the gates well in the Retox Sports Bar Maiden (1200m) first-up on March 16th but was forced to settle wide and off the pace of the race’s early leaders.

Rounding onto the final straight with plenty to do, the son of Bullbars immediately responded with a big turn of foot when asked for an extra effort and savaged the line for second.

The 2016 Champagne Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, today (Wednesday, 13 April 2016).
