Jaws Of Steel in Good Form Ahead of 2016 Champagne Stakes

April 13th, 2016

Trainer Robbie Laing is pleased with the condition of last start winner Jaws Of Steel, but concedes the colt faces a monumental task in overcoming race favourite Yankee Rose in Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Jaws Of Steel has stamped himself as a colt to following through his short racing career to date and will carry good winning form into the Champagne Stakes 2016 after producing a slick effort to win the Mornington Sires Produce Stakes (1500m) by close to two lengths a fortnight ago.

While pleased with the condition of his runner leading into the two-year-old feature race, Laing told Racing Ahead he cannot fault the form of clear race favourite Yankee Rose, who charged home to win the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) with ease last start, and appears so though she will relish a step up to a mile.

“She looks sensational Yankee Rose,” Laing said.

“She nearly won the Golden Slipper, bolted in the other day but the prize money is so damn good.

“If we can get a bit of black type, in a Group 1 it’s all positives.”

Jaws Of Steel trialled well in the lead up to his competitive debut, and produced a notable effort to run on for fourth behind the likes of Group 1 placegetter Zamzam in the Listed Pearl Stakes (1200m) first-up on March 18th.

Jumping well from the ideal barrier 5 in the Mornington Sires’, the Sharkbite colt settled in a good position on the rail in transit and while momentarily blocked upon arriving at the final straight, produced an impressive turn of foot to beat fellow Champagne Stakes acceptor Pop.

Allocated the ideal barrier 2, Jaws Of Steel has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form hoop Tye Angland in the 2016 Champagne Stakes.
