Pasadena Girl wins 2015 Champagne Stakes

April 18th, 2015

Premier Melbourne trainer Peter Moody admits that Pasadena Girl has surprised the stable and said that had he expected the Savabeel filly to be a good class three year old, not winning races as a two year old.

“When I purchased her I expected her to be probably going to the races this time next year,” Moody said.

“She surprised us, she has got an unbelievable attitude towards racing and towards her work for a little filly. She’s fronted up for the fourth time here and she has probably presented bigger and stronger on each occasion even though she is only a pony.”

“She is a little gem. It was probably only the heavy ground that cost her the Sires the other day’ Moody said.

“In fairness to the opposition she ran super and backed it up again today with a very solid performance.”

Today’s win was only Pasadena Girl’s fourth race start and she put the writing on the wall with a last start eye catching fourth to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 $1m Inglis Sires (1400m) at Randwick on April 6.

Moody is already eyeing off the Group 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick and the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield, both run over 1600m in the Spring as well as the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and possibly the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Winning jockey Hugh Bowman settled Pasadena Girl ($2.80 favourite) near the tail of the nine horse field and waited until heads were turned for home before easing her to the outside for a clear run to the line.

The little filly went to the line under hands and heels riding to score by half a length over the Gai Waterhouse trained Street Rapper ($11) with Tarquin ($8) a length away in third spot.
