2015 Champagne Stakes Tips & Selections

April 17th, 2015

Punters are treated to a double shot of Group 1 racing action to finish off the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on a high at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, betting tips and selections for one of those – the Champagne Stakes 2015 – found below.

The Barrister

There are nine two-year-olds to choose from for your bets on this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), the set weights clash due to run as Randwick Race 4 at 2:25pm (AEST).

Red hot favourite and the market mover through Ladbrokes.com.au for the win is the Peter Moody-trained Pasadena Girl in barrier four for jockey Hugh Bowman, the up-and-comer heavily backed in from $3.30 to $2.80.

She is out to become the third straight filly to beat the boys in the Champagne Stakes and comes out of the right race having put the writing on the wall with her brave fourth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in her Sydney debut.

What can beat the favourite?

The bookies say the next best bet is ATC Sires’ Produce runner-up Odyssey Moon ($3.80) along with the flying Takedown ($6) and fifth past the post in the Sires’ Tarquin ($6).

So should you stick with the order of the Champagne Stakes odds or tip an upset to get behind at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering BEST TOTE or SP + 20% on both Group 1s in Sydney on the weekend?

The Barrister ($13)

Upsets in this race have been non-existent over the past half a decade with four favourites saluting in the past five years, but think The Barrister can end that and win at double figures this year. Tommy Berry takes over for Bowman who sticks with the filly Pasadena Girl and it will be a fighting finish. While the Sires’ Produce has produced eight of the past 10 Champagne Stakes winners, Jason Warren’s up-and-comer won the Fernhill Handicap over this track and distance last weekend. He’s on the short back-up but did it easily last weekend in the mud. If the rain comes and it’s wet again he’ll fly home again and complete a double last achieved in 1998 at good odds.

Pasadena Girl ($2.80)

She’s the firming favourite and will be hard to beat no doubt. The Barrister is proven over the mile and she’s yet to do it, but if she handles the extra metres she’ll salute for the punters. The distance looks like it will suit based on her fast finishing Sires’ Produce fourth on the back of successive Flemington wins. The Melbourne form is good, she was impressive late in her Sydney debut and should be improving off that now she’s had a way this way of going at Randwick.

Street Rapper ($9.50)

For even more value, the record trainer Gai Waterhouse has in this race is imposing. She has won five times and Street Rapper looked like he’ll be a genuine miler with his brave second to fellow Champagne Stakes rival Takedown last start in a Group 3 over 1400m at Rosehill on March 28. Comes off a three week break so is fresh and Waterhouse knows how to win this race. Barrier two helps.
