Peter Moody’s lightly-raced but in-form filly Pasadena Girl is the firming favourite to win the Champagne Stakes 2015 at elite level this weekend in Sydney.

There are two Group 1 features on the Royal Randwick program on Saturday including the two-year-olds facing off in Randwick Race 4 at 2:25pm (AEST) – the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Drawn in barrier four of nine, a barrier that last produced a Champagne Stakes winner back in 2004 with Dance Hero, is the favourite in the latest Champagne Stakes odds at – Pasadena Girl.

The daughter of Savabeel has had just the three career starts to date and only one in Sydney but is in from $3.30 to $3.20 in the Champagne Stakes betting markets to continue the ace recent run of favourites in the set weights clash.

In the past four years three Champagne Stakes favourites have saluted for the punters, which bodes well for dual stakes winner Pasadena Girl.

The filly only kicked off her career in late February winning the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) at Flemington but returned on March 14 to win at the track again this time in Group 3 company.

Pasadena Girl, looking to be the third Champagne Stakes winning filly in as many years following the success of Guelph (2013) and Go Indy Go (2014), then debuted in Sydney on April 6 when finishing a brave fourth to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Sydney’s Sires’ Produce Stakes is the best lead-up to the Champagne Stakes historically especially in the last decade with all but two of the Champagne winners having had their final lead-up in the Sires.

The other top Sires’ Produce Stakes graduate from earlier this month backing up in the Champagne Stakes on the weekend is then the $3.50 second favourite, Odyssey Moon.

A six time starter and one time winner following a successful December debut at Randwick last summer, the Rodney Northam-trained Snitzel colt Odyssey Moon ran three quarters of a length away second behind the Blue Diamond Stakes winner in the Sires’ and now looks to go one better in his next Group 1 test on Saturday back at Randwick.

There are another three juveniles under $10 in the latest Champagne Stakes odds to take it out including Takedown ($6) after his fourth on the trot.

Gary Moore’s Stratum gelding may have the outside alley (9) to overcome this weekend but the lead-up form is impressive including a Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) victory in Canberra two back and the Group 3 over 1400m at Rosehill on March 28.

Fourth pick at only a slightly more generous $6.50 is then Tarquin in barrier three for flying Sydney-based jockey James McDonald.

John O’Shea’s Hard Spun colt won the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) in mid-March then ran in the Sires when fifth, an effort he’s tipped to improve on now he’s had a previous 1400m run and a poke around Randwick.

Rounding out the top hopes are then Gai Waterhouse’s improving Street Rapper ($9) out to give Sydney’s leading lady of racing her fifth Champagne Stakes win and last Saturday’s impressive Fernhill Handicap winner The Barrister ($13) who will be hard to run down here if the rain sticks around.
