Nine Confirmed in 2015 Champagne Stakes Final Field

April 15th, 2015

Just nine two-year-olds have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), in which a new champion at the highest level of racing will be crowned after trainers Peter and Paul Snowden confirmed leading contender Pride Of Dubai will return to the paddock.

Odyssey Moon boxed on for a close second in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago and is offered an exceptional chance of going one better in the Champagne Stakes after being confirmed to be partnered by champion jockey Damien Oliver and allocated the central barrier 5.

Taking out a Randwick minor over 1000m on debut in December, Odyssey Moon returned to racing in competitive form this season; finishing in the minors in each of the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) before running on for a credible eighth in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21st.

Clearly relishing a step-up in distance for the Sires’, trainer Rod Northam has been thrilled with the work produced by the Snitzel colt over the last fortnight and is confident he is more than capable of Champagne Stakes success.

Pasadena Girl has announced her racing arrival over a short but impressive three start career so far and is likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 4, with Hugh Bowman aboard in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

Jogging home to win the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) with ease on debut in late February, Pasadena Girl repeated the dose in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) on March 14th before placing fourth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes last time out.

The Barrister broke through for a maiden black type victory in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) last weekend as is sure to have taken priceless condition from the run leading into the Champagne Stakes.

Posting two wins and a minor through his six career starts, the Star Witness colt has steadily built to the task this time and is starring down the barrel of a hat-trick of wins this weekend having taken out the Mornington Sires’ Produce (1500m) leading into his Fernhill Handicap triumph.

Gai Waterhouse saddled Vancouver and English to the quinella in the 2015 Golden Slipper and is offered a great chance of further Group 1 success in the two-year-old ranks via Street Rapper, who will leave from the ideal barrier 2 in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

Failing to make much of an impact over his first two starts, the Street Boss colt charged home to win the Stramit Building Prospects Handicap (1350m) on March 5th before placing a close second in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Quality (1400m) on March 28th.
