2015 Champagne Stakes to Suit Odyssey Moon

April 14th, 2015

Odyssey Moon has posted several commendable results without being able to jag a Group 1 title over his short racing career so far, but will be perfectly suited to a mile in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes at Randwick according to trainer Rod Northam.

Posting one win and three minors through his six start career so far, Odyssey Moon jumped from the gates well in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, and while displaying an exceptional turn of foot late, was unable to make up the ground on a runaway Pride Of Dubai and finished second.

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the Snitzel colt in recent weeks, Northam told AAP he believes Odyssey Moon is asking for more ground and is exciting by his chances in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

“At the start of the prep we were trying to get him into the Golden Slipper,” Northam said.

“But we always thought the Sires’ Produce and the Champagne were going to be his best distances.

“And it’s probably worked out the way because he ran so well in the Sires’ and I think the mile of the Champagne should be right up his alley.”

Debuting for an impressive win in the $250,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) on December 13th, Odyssey Moon returned to racing for a credible third amongst classy competition in the Inglis Classic (1200m) on February 7th before placing a close second to Exosphere in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m).

Unlucky to be blocked for a run when third in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on March 14th, the colt out of Run To The Moon ran on for a commendable eighth in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) only a week later but was clearly looking for a great running distance, according to jockey Ryan Moore.

Included amongst a small list of nine nominations, Odyssey Moon is expected to be confirmed in the 2015 Champagne Stakes final field on Wednesday morning.
