Just nine runners have been included in nominations for Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick, highlighted by the pending appearance of some of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting two-year-olds.

The Barrister gained ballot-free entry into the 2015 Champagne Stakes after taking out the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) last weekend, and has been included in nominations for Saturday’s race as a result.

Posting two wins and one minor place finish through his six start career so far, The Barrister was unable to make an impact when seventh in a minor over 1000m on debut in October and was immediately returned to the paddock.

Steadily building to the task upon resuming this time, the Star Witness colt beat only handfuls of runners home in his first two starts before running second in the Inglis Sale Maiden (1200m) and taking out the Mornington Sires’ (1500m) leading into his most recent triumph.

The Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Reckless Russell and Anthony CummingsRhode Assassin have also been included in 2015 Champagne Stakes nominations via the Fernhill Handicap.

Gary Moore has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by Takedown in recent weeks and is confident he will perform to a high standard in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

Yet to finish outside the first three over four career starts, Takedown finished third in the Valentines Day Maiden Plate (1000m) on debut before winning each of the Forkbiz Maiden (1100m), Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) most recently.

Gai Waterhouse has already experienced notable two-year-old success this time via Vancouver in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and is offered a great chance of further riches with Street Rapper in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

Placing fourth in a minor over 1000m on debut in late January, Street Rapper failed to match the late pace of Haptic and Furnaces when seventh in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) but responded in the best way possible in winning the Stramit Building Products Handicap (1350m) on March 5th.

Having since placed second in The Schweppervescence, the son of Street Boss will be difficult to beat should he draw a good alley at Wednesday’s Champagne Stakes barrier draw.

Tarquin has been one of many exciting two-year-olds unearthed by Godolphin this season and is a leading chance for success in the 2015 Champagne Stakes.

Winning each of his first two starts including the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m), the Hard Spun colt boxed on for a credible fifth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out and looks likely to relish a step up to a mile on Saturday.
