Go Indy Go Claims 2014 Champagne Stakes

April 26th, 2014

South Australian raider Go Indy Go has continued her sensational career start at Royal Randwick this afternoon, sprinting well to win the major Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) from Zululand and Kumaon.

Jumping well, the Bernardini filly settled well within the pack, allowing early leader and rank outsider Unknown Destiny, as well as Zululand and Lucky Raquie to set a reasonable tempo.

Rounding the bend in a relatively wide position, Go Indy Go displayed a keen turn of foot to quickly find the pace of the leaders, poking half-a-length clear to stamp her position as one of country’s most exciting up-and-comers and deliver young jockey Chad Schofield only a third Group 1 title.

Trainer Leon Macdonald was understandably thrilled with Go Indy Go’s performance in the 2014 Champagne Stakes, ranking the two-year-old at the top of the pile of all runners he has trained over a long and successful career.

“She’s very impressive, and young Chad was very confident before the race and he rode her accordingly; gave her a beautiful run and wasn’t it great”

“She relished the mile; she beat nothing the other day at Morphettville (Group 3 Sires’ Produce Stakes 1400m) and really it was a track gallop for her.

“She’s right up the top; I’ve always thought that and I didn’t like to say it before today.

“Looks a typical Oaks horse, doesn’t she.”

Having claimed the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on Shamus Award and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) aboard Lankan Rupee, rising star Chad Schofield delivered a perfectly timed run on Go Indy Go to continue his standout racing season, and was full of praise for Macdonald’s team in preparing a top performer.

“Fantastic; obviously Group 1 number three today and such an impressive victory” Schofield said after dismounting.

“She was at the tail of the field in a muddling run race, a lot of horses were on the bridle pulling but she was just in a nice rhythm.

“Around the turn Peggy Jean whipped around me and as soon as it did that, I hopped on her back and as soon as I balanced her up down the straight and asked her to quicken she did exactely that and put a good field away very easily – a very dominant win.

“She was very well prepared today by the stable; Leon Macdonald and I’m just so grateful to him and the owners for the opportunity, they now have a very, very nice filly on their hands.”

Having now claimed a maiden Group 1 title, Go Indy Go will return to Adelaide and the spelling paddock ahead of a spring preparation geared towards the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).
