Having claiming the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out Peggy Jean has opened as and maintained favouritism in betting markets for success in the Champagne Stakes, currently offered at even $3 odds ahead of Veuvelicious ($3.30), Bachman ($5) and Go Indy Go ($7).

Can Peggy Jean claim a second title at the highest level of Australian racing in as many starts, or will one of her talented rivals find the line in the clear this weekend?

Scratch Me Lucky ($9.50)

Claiming one win and three places from his eight race starts to date, Scratch Me Lucky represents sensational value for money at current $9.50 odds for success in the 2014 Champagne Stakes. Steadily building to the task, the Snitzel colt has hit peak condition over his last two runs; unlucky to finish second behind fellow Champagne Stakes acceptor Bachman in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) and figuring as the only runner to challenge Peggy Jean in the Sires’ Produce last time out. Having drawn the ideal gate 4 at Wednesday’s barrier draw, Scratch Me Lucky will be partnered by regular jockey Blake Shinn this weekend.

Peggy Jean ($3)

Yet to finish outside the places in five race starts so far, Peggy Jean has been far and away one of the standout two-year-olds this season and solidified her Champagne Stakes favouritism with her comfortably Sires’ Produce victory in week 1 of The Championships. While allocated the wide barrier 10 for this weekend’s two-year-old feature, trainer Gerald Ryan is confident the form and class of the Myboycharlie filly will count for a lot, particularly with in-form and regular jockey Nash Rawiller confirmed to take the ride.

Go Indy Go ($7)

While yet to appear alongside the majority of her Champagne Stakes rivals competitively, leading South Australian prospect Go Indy Go represents a great chance for an upset at Randwick this weekend. Finishing second in her first two races which included the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) behind London Lolly, the Bernardini filly broke through for a maiden race win in the Group 3 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville on April 12th, earning her position in this weekend’s field. Allocated the central barrier 6, Go Indy Go will be partnered by up-and-coming jockey Chad Schofield, and is well and truly worth a placing wager.
