2014 Champagne Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 23rd, 2014

A talented field of ten runners have been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) and final stop of the two-year-old Triple Crown at Royal Randwick racecourse this weekend.

Yet to finishing outside the places in five competitive starts to date, Gerald Ryan has confirmed Peggy Jean for a tilt at the 2014 Champagne Stakes after strolling home to win the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out.

Unlucky to finish second over 1000 metres on debut, Peggy Jean broke through for a maiden race victory amongst classy competition in the Inglis Classic (1200m) on January 18th, finishing third in the ATC Membership On Sale Now Handicap (1200m) next time out.

Overcoming a poor jump and resulting field to position to finish just in the red of Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) the Myboycharlie filly appeared unstoppable when strolling home to win the Sires’ Produce by nearly a length ahead of fellow Champagne Stakes acceptor Scratch Me Lucky; third placed Cornrow a further six lengths behind.

Despite being allocated the wide barrier 10 for this weekend’s major for two-year-olds, Peggy Jean’s chances took a huge boost when in-form jockey Nash Rawiller was confirmed to retain the ride.

Ryan is set to dominate the running of the 2014 Champagne Stakes, having also accepted positions in the final field for talented pair Bachman and Lucky Raquie.

Finishing outside the places just once in four competitive starts so far, Bachman will carry winning form into the Champagne Stakes, having claimed the TAB Ipad App Maiden (1300m) and the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) back-to-back in his two most recent appearances.

Allocated the ideal barrier 3, The All American colt will be partnered by talented jockey Hugh Bowman this weekend.

Initially confirmed to be returning to the spelling paddock following an unsuccessful run for eighth in the Sires’ Produce last time out, Lucky Raquie will have to overcome barrier 9 if to justify her connections’ choice for one more tilt this time in.

Winner of the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) ahead of particularly talented competition on March 9th, the Encosta De Lago filly has been unable to handle the heavy going in either of her two most recent races, but is faced with the prospect of a far firmer Randwick surface this weekend.

Putting the fight to Peggy Jean in the dying stages of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, Scratch Me Lucky is offered a good opportunity to reverse the dose this weekend, having received barrier 4 for the Champagne Stakes.

Securing one win and three places from eight race starts, Scratch Me Lucky will line up as the most experienced horse in the Champagne Stakes final field, and will be aiming to draw strength from her two favourable lead up runs for second.

Aiming to complete a rare Sires’ Produce double having won the Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on March 8th, Zululand was unable to match the late pace of Peggy Jean and Scratch Me Lucky, finishing nearly seven lengths off the pace in fifth.

Confirmed to be partnered by jockey Stephen Baster in the 2014 Champagne Stakes, trainer David Hayes is confident the Fastnet Rock colt has the class to overcome the slightly wide barrier 7.
