2014 Champagne Stakes Nominations Released

April 22nd, 2014

A less-than capacity field of 10 has been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s 2014 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick this weekend; the final stop of the two-year-old Triple Crown.

Yet to finish outside the places and comfortably claiming the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out, Peggy Jean has been included in nominations for the 2014 Champagne Stakes.

Quickly stamping her claims as a two-year-old to watch this season when claiming the Inglis Classic (1200m) ahead of classy competition in only her second appearance on January 18th, Peggy Jean has continued to build in impressive form; finishing second in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) prior to her Sires’ Produce victory most recently.

Trainer Gerald Ryan is confident Peggy Jean poses one of the biggest threats of any two-year-old to this year’s Spring Racing Carnival, and is confident the Myboycharlie filly will carry winning form this the spelling paddock with victory in the Champagne Stakes.

Ryan is set to dominate the final field of the 2014 Champagne Stakes, having also nominated classy two-year-olds Bachman and Lucky Raquie for an appearance this weekend.

Securing two impressive wins from only four race starts to date, Bachman will pose a serious threat to the 2014 Champagne Stakes if allocated a favourable gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.

Unlucky when blocked for a run and fourth in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) in his debut race, the All American colt produced a strong turn of foot to overcome poor position and finish third in the Australian Turf Club Maiden (1200m) on March 5th, before securing back-to-back victories in the TAB Ipad App Maiden (1300m) and Group 3 Schweppervescence (1400m) last time out.

While yet to hit peak condition over five competitive starts to date, Lucky Raquie finished third in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut in October, and while unlucky to finish sixth in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) first-up this season, the Encosta De Lago filly broke through for her maiden race win in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) on March 9th.

Unable to handle the heavy going when eighth in the Sires’ Produce last time out, Ryan will allow Wednesday’s final field and barrier draw dictate whether or not Lucky Raquie will indeed accept to appear in the Champagne Stakes this weekend.

The sole entrant from trainer David Hayes, Zululand will be aiming to overcome a disappointing run for fifth in the Sires’ Produce last time out this weekend, having been nominated for an appearance in the Champagne Stakes.

Having been chasing a rare double in Sires’ Produce events after taking out the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse on March 8th, Zululand received noticeable attention from punters in betting markets for the ATC Sires Produce, but was unable to match the last pace of Peggy Jean.

Securing one win and one place from only five race starts to date, the Fastnet Rock colt has reportedly taken to training well over the last fortnight, and is set to line up for this weekend’s Group 1 in prime condition.

Contesting one win and three places from eight race starts so far, talented colt Scratch Me Lucky will arguably line up for the 2014 Champagne Stakes as the field’s most experienced runner.

The sole emergency for the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th, the Snitzel colt has hit good condition over his two most recent appearances; unlucky to finish second in both The Schweppervescence and ATC Sires’ Produce.

Talented South Australian Go Indy Go has also been included in nominations for the 2014 Champagne Stakes, and is set to be joined by Kumaon, Proxy, Unknown Destiny and Veuvelicious in Wednesday’s final field.
