Champagne Stakes 2013 Final Field & Barrier Draw

April 24th, 2013

This Saturday one of the three Group 1 highlights on the Sydney Cup Day program will be the 2013 Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds, the race completing the Sydney 2YO Triple Crown for another autumn.

Scheduled to run as Randwick Race 5 at 2:55pm (AEST) this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon 150th Champagne Stakes (1600m) has drawn a final field of 14 juveniles with the odds-on favourite being the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph.

The Exceed And Excel filly, drawn nicely in barrier six with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, was an eye-catching fourth in the Golden Slipper two starts back before relishing the step up in distance to beat home the Slipper winner Overreach in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) last start.

They now shoot for back-to-back Group 1 victories in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday and are well liked to thrive over the mile and score the Sires – Champagne double achieved last year by the recently retired Pierro.

The three other top fancies to join Pierro in the Champagne Stakes winners list are then Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Fast ‘N’ Rocking (barrier one) coming off a credible fifth in the Golden Slipper, Todman Stakes winner Criterion (barrier eight) who was one further back than Fast ‘N’ Rocking in the Slipper, and Magic Night Stakes champ Scandiva (barrier five) coming off a second to Guelph in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes.

Other notable hopes at juicer prices in the Champagne Stakes betting odds then include Riocetto after successive wins at the track within seven days having won last weekend’s Fernhill Handicap in the wet, Sires Produce fourth placed Drago with the extreme outside barrier to overcome and Gai Waterhouse’s Fastnet Rock filly Shahad who ran second in the Magic Night and fifth in the Sires.
