2011 Champagne Stakes Form Guide

April 21st, 2011

The 2011 Champagne Stakes gives every indication it will live up to the already hugely popular two-year-old series we’ve witnessed throughout this year.

With Sepoy in the paddock it’s time for a new contingent of horses to make their mark and at this stage it looks like Helmet is the prime pick.

He won the Sires Produce Stakes last start and another win here would give the Darley stable the triple crown of Group 1 two-year-old events throughout the Autumn Carnival.

There are a few standing in their way through with Patinack Farm out to spoil the party with a good chance in Pane In The Glass.

It’s not just the big boys in the running either with Uate, an undefeated horse until last start, looking for swift revenge.

When you look through the Champagne Stakes Form Guide half a dozen runners are genuine contenders for the title.

This means betting on the race is very interesting and the Luxbet markets are offering tremendous value right across the field.

2011 Champagne Stakes Form Guide

#1 – Helmet (Barrier – 8) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Snowden
  • Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
  • Career Stats: 4s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 1st at Randwick

Went to three from three this preparation with an awesome performance in the Sires Produce Stakes. He’s beaten plenty of this field already but a dryer track makes it a whole new contest.

#2 – Salade (Barrier – 1) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Bart Cummings
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 2s – 1w – 0p
  • Last Start: 8th at Rosehill

Forget the eighth because it was in the Golden Slipper against a much classier Group 1 field. He’s right in this race and you know Cummings will have him in peak form.

#3 – Uate (Barrier – 5) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Kris Lees
  • Jockey: Nash Rawiller
  • Career Stats: 4s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Randwick

Shapes as the major challenger in this race after being beaten only half a length by Helmet last start. Previous form was impeccable, he’s a must for all exotics..

#4 – Running Tall (Barrier – 11) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Danny O’Brien
  • Jockey: Glen Boss
  • Career Stats: 5s – 1w – 2p
  • Last Start: 11th at Rosehill

Wasn’t up to the grade in the Golden Slipper but he’s not completely out of it here. Can’t see him winning the race but he could jag a third with a bit of luck.

#5 – Cocky Raider (Barrier – 12) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: David Payne
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 4s – 1w – 2p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Randwick

Steps up in grade but you get the feeling a dry track last start and this gelding wins the race. Has placed behind Do You Think and if Payne has improved the horse it’ll run on well.

#6 – Queenian (Barrier – 6) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: David Payne
  • Jockey: Michael Rodd
  • Career Stats: 3s – 0w – 2p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Randwick

Horse is on the improve and her first win is just around the corner. Unsure if she’ll break her maiden at Group 1 level but she certainly won’t be too far away.

#7 – Boys On Tour (Barrier – 10) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Jim Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 5s – 1w – 1p
  • Last Start: 10th at Randwick

New race plan will see him ridden a lot closer to the pace this time around but he’ll need more than that to be a threat. Was 2nd in the Pago Pago Stakes two back and will improve but not win.

#8 – Muhaajir (Barrier – 7) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Jason Coyle
  • Jockey: Damien Oliver
  • Career Stats: 5s – 0w – 0p
  • Last Start: 9th at Randwick

Has made a Group 1 field despite never even placing. Connections should be thankful for that because they won’t be winning the race.

#9 – Pane In The Glass (Barrier – 4) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Jim Byrne
  • Career Stats: 6s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Randwick

Consistent as any in the field and a dry track will surely make her one of the favourites. If you can find a proven horse in a two-year-old race you’d be crazy not to back it.

#10 – Fast And Sexy (Barrier –3) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 5s – 1w – 2p
  • Last Start: 6th at Randwick

Really tough filly to figure out and she’s been around the top grade horse for a few races. Should be at decent value and will likely be an exotic payer come race day.

#11 – Disputes (Barrier – 2) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Snowden
  • Jockey: Joshua Parr
  • Career Stats: 4s – 0w – 2p
  • Last Start: 5th at Randwick

She’s never been disgraced by her finishing position but she’s never been impressive either. Needs a big form jump from her last start but I don’t think she’ll find it.

#12 – Houston Benefactor (Barrier – 9) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Career Stats: 4s – 0w – 3p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Randwick

Horse has performed well in track work and Anthony Cummings has plenty of expectations. Not going to rule it out of this race but it would certainly be an upset we haven’t tipped.
