Moonee Valley’s Champagne Stakes Nominations

September 21st, 2010

The 2010 Group 3 Champagne Stakes is set to jump this Saturday, September 25 at Moonee Valley. The nominations for the upcoming race have been announced with 18 quality runners stepping up for a shot at the title and $150,000 in prize money.

Kembla Grange based trainer Michael Tubman headlines the group with his three-year-old Chance Bye. The bay filly placed third in the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) in late August, but followed it up with a disappointing 10th out of 15 performance in the Golden Rose (1400m).

Military Rose is also among the early front runners in these nominations. The Gillian Heinrich-trained filly is coming in off of a disappointing run in the Danehill Stakes (1200m), though is one of the more experienced runners in the field.

John O’Shea’s Solar Charged has gained some early attention, as the 2010 Champagne Stakes will be the filly’s debut start in Melbourne. She’s had two second place finishes in as many starts, which includes the Silver Shadow Stakes where she outraced fellow nomination Chance Bye to come in a close second to Parables.

John O’Shea-trained Shaaheq will be representing the local stocks. The three-year-old bay filly saw somewhat of a return for form with two fourth place finishes after a disappointing 10th place finish in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

The 2010 Champagne Stakes will jump this Saturday as part of Moonee Valley’s night racing season opener. Other notable races include the Group 1 Manikato Stakes and the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes. Be sure to check back for the final field announcement and a full race preview later on this week.
