Skilled Wins Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes

April 28th, 2010

The Peter Snowden-trained Skilled defeated a classy field of fellow two-year-olds at Randwick on Saturday in the $300,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), giving jockey Josh Parr his first Group 1 success.

In a blanket finish, Skilled ($10) beat home the Tim Martin-trained Sasa ($8) by a mere head with the Darley stables other runner, Divorces ($15), a neck back for third.

After the run, runner-up Sasa’s jockey Tye Angland lodged a protest stating that early interference by Skilled and Par cost them the win.

But stewards rejected the protest and Parr was handed his first elite level win, while Snowden enjoyed his first Group 1 win of the Sydney autumn carnival after a frustrating succession of minor placings.

Skilled now has three wins from six starts to their name.
